What is Teaching to me?

“What Teaching means to Me” Yeshi Jamtsho Teaching is a transmission of knowledge, skills and values to someone who needs. It happens voluntarily in most of the cases, but in some cases it needs to be enforced as it is necessitated by the situation. For instance, the children of today cannot afford to be unaware of computer skills as it is the age of the computer. Teaching happens when a person with adequate knowledge and skills willingly imparts to those novice who requires it the most. Teaching appears to bear its beauty when a learner begins to find taste in it and appreciates the values of what one receives from the giver. In the past, some considered teaching as parallel to preaching. In fact, they are first cousins but not identical twins. Preaching would happen irrespective of learner’s interest and ability and it is mostly dominated by dos and don’ts and not allowing an inch to budge away from what is mandated. But in teaching, there are several factors to be considered prior to the action that takes place. The first priority would be the learner’s need to learn something. It should be probed by attitude and aptitude. Unless these pre-requisites are prevalent, the teaching is not likely to happen. Therefore, to garner the string of teaching, one should visualize the factors aforementioned. Teaching to me is a special task. This is because I have taken up the teaching for my profession. This is my pillar that supports my life. I cannot plough fields as a farmer would do, nor can I weld an iron piece as a blacksmith could because I am not meant for it. We all have our own choice of living and surviving. I have opted teaching for my profession as it appeared the most suitable for me. Many vocations and professions were not to my interest and somewhere not to my caliber. Those made me ruminate that the teaching is a “gift for me” and I must embrace it, for the rest of my life. I should find joy in it and must perform it without hesitation. Having mentioned that teaching is my profession, I take it as a challenge. It is a challenge because nothing in the world is as simple as one might imagine. Everything that one does is accompanied with certain difficulties. It is the difficulty that makes one find satisfaction at the end of the task. The end of the task is labeled as “achievement”. The achievement is what everybody desires. Teaching for me is a great pride. I take pride in it because not many people dare to take up this job. To be a teacher is Columbus. Everyone taking up this job is a “Columbus”. A person without a proper set objective and boldness would never attempt to become a teacher. Teaching requires a great deal of exploration as the historical Columbus did. Such exploration necessarily involves risk. One who dares take risk would finally end up with success and success leads to pride and fulfillment. Teaching as opposed to preaching is a practical bit. Saying is not enough, but demonstration of what one says is more important and believing to the audience (learners). Teaching leads the learner to realize and understand the realities of the world. It directly exposes the learners to the real life situation and informs them to be vigilant about the life. In conclusion, teaching is about providing special lenses to the needy to explore ways to see rights and wrongs. Teaching is to relish watching new flowers bloom in the spring of life. Teaching is freeing the captives from the cage by giving someone the ability to emancipate to higher cosmos.
